Nine Inch Nails: The Day the World Went Away (Oh Trent...how we all adore you)

Nine Inch Nails - live at the Hordern Pavilion in Australia on September 16, 2007.

Trent Reznor:
"Last time I was here, I was doing a lot of complaining about the ridiculous prices of CDs down here. And that story got picked up and got carried all around the world and now my record label all around the world hates me, because I yelled at them, I called them out for being greedy fucking assholes. I didn't get a chance to check, has the price come down at all? I see a no, a no, a no... Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means - STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these motherfuckers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that that's not right."

As my friend Jeff put it:
"This may be one of the greatest things I've ever heard an artist say from a stage."

I have to agree.

*edit* Heh, a friend of mine asked me to make this post more deep and thoughtful....what are we complaining about my short posts now? Sheesh.

What the heck could I say that I haven't already about Trent and his connection with his fans? Ya know, the recording industry is manned by business people for the most part and the artists themselves are so far removed from the promoters and the same ilk that I can sorta understand how intentions can be so different. Still don't make it right though. It makes perfect sense that they can only think in terms of dollars amounts and chart ratings. They are after all, business people. Trent, on the other hand is an artist. You get the sense he'd be a Burning Man gazing in the Fibric Xyrex cube smoking pot with the homies (okay probably not smoking pot, but you get my drift) if he had the time. He know that real art is a communal experience. Something that holds greater meaning if you can talk about it, share, find a connection with one another with. So, although he uses the word 'steal' I think he know that connotation is 'share.'

Somewhat related note, this video is going to give me nightmares for a long while (backstage in Sydney):

I have no idea. It almost sounds like a track that Trent and Co. slapped together...at least it kinda sounds like his voice.

And then at the other end of the scale, you have Prince suing (or threatening to sue, I forget) YouTube for playing his videos.

I can't complain too much about CD prices. The gouging tends to be much worse in other countries. I just wish when I did buy the CD I knew more of it was going to the artist.

That's a good point VK. The artist gets such a small percentage of it anyway....I had no idea Prince sued. Good grief! I'll just add him to the annoying rock star pile along with Lars Ulrich.

Here's Beyonce doing a version of that song...

I thought it sounded like Trent too, but with his voice slowed down or something. Evidently not.

The Beyonce version sounds different. Could the masked dancer be dancing to a NIN remix of a Beyonce song?? He did remix for Puff Daddy, so I wouldn't really be surprised.

Actually it doesn't sound at all like a NIN remix. I take that back. I do like it though, better than the Beyonce version (or Missy Elliot - she also has a version of it). That bass guitar is just f**n brilliant!

I just want to add that some (not all) artists are really getting screwed on iTunes downloads. If you bought a CD in a store, the band might be allowed up to 30 cents per track. On iTunes, the same band would get 5 or 6 cents a track (memory is hazy but that's close) for the sale of the download of the same album. Weird Al Yankovic noted this online last year, and though he is glad to get money from iTunes purchasers, he would make a lot more if his fans bought the CD. He is not alone. Just FYI.

Shawn! How did you find the Beyonce version???? I had no idea it was a real song...

That is good information to know. Granted, I never buy music from iTunes because I'm a sucker for cover art and liner notes (if you can't already tell from the bulk of my CD reviews). I like having physical CDs lining my walls. Just justifies my album purchases more...besides, it's easier to sing a CD than a mp3 file. :P

Oh okay...it's "Music makes you lose control" by Les Rythmes...really sounds a bit like Trent's vox though!
